This term our science unit has focused on the natural disasters and the elements of the earth. We have had lots of interesting discussions about the tectonic plates and the different types of boundaries and this lead to us questioning how knowing about the boundaries impacts on where we live and what we build.
We decided to investigate and help us to find out a bit more about building design and materials.
We investigated the design and materials by creating two structures and then simulating earthquakes. We had to keep some variables the same (the size of the structure, the duration of the earthquake and the size of the earthquake) and we changed some variables (the materials that the structure was made from). We then investigated how each structure held up under different strength earthquakes. We kept the materials, the size of the structure and the duration of the earthquake the same but the variable we changed was the strength of our simulated earthquake!
